Eels shocked by blistering Broncos
by Chris Cox
Sunday April 10, 2005

The doom and gloom of last Saturday's debacle in Melbourne seemed a distant memory as the Broncos annihilated Parramatta 54-14 at Suncorp Stadium.

On a warm afternoon following several days of rain, the Broncos had the 25000 fans on their feet at half time going to the break 42-0 ahead, beating the clock at more than a point per minute.

The Broncos' 7 first half tries were brilliant to watch, and all but two were started from around the halfway mark. Parramatta trudged off the field shellshocked and never recovered.

Don't write off bewildered Broncos
by Simon Roberts
Sunday April 3, 2005

Last night spelt the most embarrassing moment in the history of the most successful team of the modern era, but one can’t help to refer to the 18 years of that proud tradition and assume the Brisbane Broncos will bounce back and buck the mediocrity of their latest performance.

With Wayne Bennett at the helm of the Broncos, the undulating performance patterns of the NRL competition, and the fact we’re only at a very early stage in a long and gruelling season, the Brisbane Broncos will be back. If I remember correctly it was only 48 hours ago that the Broncos were touted as premiership favourites from some punters after their 8 tries to 4 drubbing of the Sydney Roosters.

Storm destroy disgraceful Broncos
by Chris Cox
Sunday April 3, 2005

The Brisbane Broncos have suffered their worst defeat in their 17-year history, going down 50-4 to a red hot Melbourne Storm at Olympic Park. The Storm scored 10 tries to 1 - and the Broncos' try came from a Storm gimme - completely embarrassing the visitors.

The carnage started in just the second minute when Matt King retrieved a Matt Orford bomb out wide. Darren Lockyer levelled minutes later when Billy Slater inexplicably offloaded to him after a kick return, allowing the Broncos' skipper to score untouched and level at 4-4.

From then on, it was all the Storm. Matt Geyer scored after a brilliant Matt Orford cut out pass; Matt King latched onto a great Ryan Hoffman offload and palmed off a hapless Karmichael Hunt to score a 60 metre try; Hoffman presented Geyer with his second try with a round-the-corner pass and then Slater crossed untouched for the Storm to lead 24-4 at half time.

Parker faces Storm
by Chris Cox
Tuesday March 29, 2005

Queensland State of Origin forward, Corey Parker, is set to return to the starting side when the Brisbane Broncos clash with Melbourne Storm at Olympic Park this Saturday night.

Parker, who missed last week's win over the Sydney Roosters with a shoulder injury suffered in round 2, shifts Dane Carlaw back to the bench. Neale Wyatt drops out of the squad.

Australian Test forward, Tonie Carroll, is still unavailable with a knee injury but is expected back for the Eels game at Suncorp Stadium on April 10. Neville Costigan will also be available for the Eels after returning from suspension for a dangerous throw during the first round of the Queensland Cup.

Brilliant Broncos run Roosters ragged
by Chris Cox
Saturday March 26, 2005

The Brisbane Broncos put last week's poor showing against the New Zealand Warriors behind them with a commanding 40-22 win over Sydney Roosters at Aussie Stadium. After several seasons struggling to put points on quality sides, the Broncos racked up eight tries to four in a sensational display of skill and speed.

After leading 14-0 going into the break, the Broncos allowed the Roosters back into the contest with tries to Anthony Minichiello and Iosia Soliola either side of half time reducing the lead to just 2 points.

However, skipper Darren Lockyer took control, and teenage wing sensation Leon Bott finally had a chance to show off his speed with a blistering 50 metre dash in which he beat four defenders untouched to score out wide.

Civoniceva back for Roosters
by Chris Cox
Tuesday March 22, 2005

Broncos' international front rower, Petero Civoniceva has been chosen to start against Sydney Roosters at Aussie Stadium on Good Friday. Civoniceva missed last week's 24-12 loss to the Warriors due to a knee injury suffered in the season opener against the Cowboys.

Civoniceva's return pushes Sam Thaiday, who impressed against the Warriors, back to the interchange bench.

Brad Thorn retains his starting spot in the back row after a strong performance last week with Tonie Carroll still at least a week away from returning from injury.

Warriors too good for Broncos
by Chris Cox
Saturday March 19, 2005

A committed Warriors outfit have outmuscled a disorganised Broncos side 24-12 at Suncorp Stadium in front of just under 25000 fans.

The Warriors led 10-4 at half time, with honours largely shared before extending their lead to 16-4 midway through the second half thanks to a try to Jerome Ropati and a third penalty goal to halfback Stacey Jones, despite fullback Brent Webb being in the sin bin.

Brisbane went on a mini revival in the next 10 minutes, starting with a very popular try to Brad Thorn, in just his second game back from the dark side. On the last tackle, play looked certain to break down before Karmichael Hunt noticed space on the left. A neat overhead pass to Darren Lockyer put the skipper into space, streaking through the defence up the middle of the ruck before finding Thorn in support to score beside the posts.

Broncos off to solid start
by Chris Cox
Sunday March 13, 2005

The Brisbane Broncos led from start to finish in a pulsating Queensland derby at Suncorp Stadium, prevailing 29-16 over a gallant but error ridden North Queensland Cowboys. In front of a big crowd of 43438, Brisbane jumped to a 12-0 lead early in the game courtesy of an intercept try to Corey Parker and a beautiful grubber kick from Brett Seymour presenting Shaun Berrigan with a gift try.

The Cowboys hit back when Matt Bowen supported a nice Paul Bowman break but the Broncos went further in front when Darren Lockyer supported a bust from Tonie Carroll. Lockyer handled twice in the movement, firstly sending a ball out to Brent Tate who flicked the ball inside to Carroll.

Carroll sprinted through the gap and passed inside to Lockyer who juggled, regathered and scored behind the posts.

Team for Cowboys clash named
by Mike Aitken
Wednesday March 9, 2005

The Brisbane Broncos have named their team for their round 1 clash with the North Queensland Cowboys. The team includes teenage sensation Leon Bott, who is still studying year twelve at the Gap State High School, and the return of Justin Hodges and Brad Thorn. The side is extremely strong all over, with Wayne Bennett having the luxury of having Brad Thorn a dual international and Australian League representative Dane Carlaw on the bench at his disposal.

The team is a mix of speed (Bott), skill (Lockyer), and muscle (Webcke). Two back-up players have been named on the bench, Neville Costigan and Sammy Thaiday are obviously preparing with the squad just in case Dane Carlaw's sholder doesn't pass a fitness test over the weekend. The Cowboys have also named a strong lineup including former Bronco Carl Webb, ensuring a spectacular game on Sunday.

Go ahead, make my day
by Chris Cox
Sunday February 27, 2005

There's little doubt the fans will dub him "Clint", but Greg Eastwood would simply be happy to be recognised after an eyecatching top grade debut in the Broncos' 26-20 trial victory over Canberra at Clive Berghofer Stadium in Toowoomba.

Eastwood, who was originally named on the bench for Toowoomba, played the final 20 minutes and scored with just his first touch of the football, supporting down the right wing to score untouched to take his side to a 20-14 lead.

Canberra hit back through Clinton Schifcofske, who levelled the scores with a try of his own before Eastwood had the fans on their feet with a 75th minute effort that could only be described as incredible.
