McLinden dive sinks Broncos
by Chris Cox
Sunday June 27, 2004

Canberra halfback Mark McLinden made several decisive moves during his side's 21-14 win over Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium which ultimately proved the difference.

Arguably the most crucial was late in the second half with his side ahead 18-14 and hit in a brutal tackle by Tonie Carroll. The Broncos forward fell on McLinden awkwardly, his elbow landing on McLinden's cheek, and the cheeky halfback stayed down.

The video referee investigated and awarded a penalty, which Matthew Gafa duly kicked for a crucial 6-point lead with just 10 minutes remaining. McLinden then landed a field goal with six minutes on the clock to seal victory.

Parfitt Fuels Clydesdales Comeback
by Michael Fedrick
Monday June 21, 2004

An incredible 26-point haul from fullback Nick Parfitt helped the Clydesdales to a 46-26 victory over North's Devils at Bishop Park yesterday.

After trailing on the scoreboard for the majority of the first half, the Clydesdales hit their straps in the second stanza to collect the points in a high quality game.

The home side had a perfect start to the match, notching two tries in the first ten minutes through Fifita Moala and Glen Turner.

Hail our Smithy
by Chris Cox
Saturday June 19, 2004

When Darren Smith ended his Broncos career with the last try in the 38-12 Grand Final win over Canterbury in 1998, his 23rd for the year, he equalled Steve Renouf's tryscoring record in a season for the club. Just shy of six years later, he returned to the Broncos to answer a SOS call from coach Wayne Bennett, scored two tries, and inspired Brisbane to a 34-24 win.

The Broncos showed plenty of character to overcome chronic exhaustion for their six Origin players to twice repel the Eels who levelled the scores. None was more heroic than captain and five-eighth, Darren Lockyer.

Lockyer played the same roles for the full 80 minutes on Wednesday night, and did it again 72 hours later and he proved the difference between the two sides.

Queensland Cup Round 14 Preview
by Michael Fedrick
Friday June 18, 2004

Only five Queensland Cup matches will be played this weekend, but they will stretch all the way from Cairns to Tweed Heads.

Brothers-Valleys and Souths-Logan will play their round 14 clash next Saturday, which is a weekend off for the rest of the teams.

Nevertheless, this weekend promises to be another entertaining and exciting round of Queensland Cup football, as the race towards the finals continues.

The battle of the Seagulls will be fought out at Tweed, the Clydesdales will travel to the graveyard of Bishop Park to face the high-flying Devils, while reigning premiers Redcliffe will try to keep their form going against the Young Guns in Cairns.

Maroons snare return clash
by Dan Koch
Wednesday June 16, 2004

Melbourne flyer Billy Slater has scored one of State of Origin’s greatest individual tries to help the Maroons to a sensational 22-18 victory, levelling the interstate series at 1-1.

Trailing 12-6 at the break, Queensland turned in an amazing second half performance, with big forwards Petero Civoniceva, Ben Ross, Shane Webcke and Steven Price powering in the middle of the ruck allowing five-eighth Darren Lockyer to release speed merchants Slater, Rhys Wesser and Willie Tonga on a tiring NSW defence.

The Blues started strongly with Newcastle duo Matt Gidley and Timana Tahu combining to put the athletic winger over out wide after only six minutes.

Tallis out of Eels clash
by Chris Cox
Tuesday June 15, 2004

Broncos captain, Gorden Tallis, has been diagnosed with bruising of the spinal column and has been ruled out for the next two games, including Saturday night's clash with Parramatta at Parramatta Stadium. Tallis, who was injured two weeks ago during Brisbane's round 12 win over St George-Illawarra, will have missed a month of football by the time he returns against South Sydney in round 17.

Tallis will be joined on the sideline by centres Brent Tate (shoulder) and Shaun Berrigan (hamstring), both of whom were injured during Brisbane's last round loss to Cronulla. Stu Kelly moves into the centres to partner Mick De Vere, with Nick Parfitt coming onto the wing.

Queensland Cup Wrap - Round 13
by Michael Fedrick
Tuesday June 15, 2004

Another extremely entertaining and interesting round of football occurred over the weekend, which left an incredible four teams tied for first on the competition table.

The top seven teams in the competition are now within 2 points of each other, highlighting just how close together in talent and potential the teams are. One thing is for sure: we are going to see a very exciting race to the finals as the season moves further towards the business end.

The ABC match of the round between Easts and Toowoomba was billed as one of the games of the year, and it well and truly lived up to the expectation. Darren Smith and Steve Renouf lead the visitors to a 30-22 win over the Clydesdales, who were also jam-packed with ex and current NRL stars.

Dominant tackle, we lost our legs!
by Mike Aitken
Thursday June 10, 2004

After squirming in my seat for sixty minutes on Sunday watching the Sharks dominating the Broncos in the forwards I thought to myself “when do the broncos ever dominate in tackles lately?” It’s a legitimate question which I couldn’t answer. Rugby League these days are won in two areas; dominating the tackle and field territory. Field territory has always been a major part in a successful game plan, Andrew Johns, Darren Lockyer, Brent Sherwin, Craig Gower and Brett Kimmorley are just a few players that spring to mind that have a great long kicking game. But that means nothing if a team can’t dominate the play the ball area, and affecting a ‘dominate’ tackle.

This happened when the Broncos lost in ‘Golden Point’ to Newcastle. Brisbane received the kick off from Newcastle and started doing the hard yards against a team who were down to a two man bench. The Knights were able to push the Broncos back in tackles, effectively being labeled a ‘dominant tackle’ by the referee and slowing down the play the ball. Brisbane appeared slow, they weren’t making ground and Newcastle were adjusting the defensive line before the Broncos had even played the ball. The Broncos got a kick away from either Casey McGuire or Karmichael Hunt which was fielded by the Knights on their own forty meter line. The Knights performed strong hit-ups plowing into the Broncos dragging the tacklers forward with them. The Knights were afforded speedy play the balls and were able to place an ‘attacking kick’ into the in-goal of the Broncos. The same passage happened again although when Newcastle started their next set they were close enough for a field goal attempt.

Lockyer Recalled
by Chris Cox
Monday June 7, 2004

In stark contrast to victorious New South Wales, Queensland have made just two changes to the side that lost the opening State of Origin last month for the return clash at Suncorp Stadium on June 16. After successfully returning from broken ribs against the Sharks yesterday, Broncos' five-eighth Darren Lockyer has been selected at five-eighth and captain.

Chris Flannery has moved back to the bench at the expense of North Queensland's Travis Norton who has been dropped.

Norton's Cowboys teammate, Matt Sing, replaces Justin Hodges on the wing. Hodges had an unhappy night in the first Origin clash and Sing's successful return from a knee injury in the Cowboys 14-12 win over St George-Illawarra was enough for the Maroons to return him to the side.
