Team for Cowboys clash remains unchanged.
by Mike Aitken
Tuesday September 14, 2004

Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett has named an unchanged side from last weeks lost loss to the Melbourne Storm. Bennett has refused to drop any players and will give them another chance to turn their season around in Townsville on Saturday night. A notable addition to the squad is work horse David Stagg. Stagg has been sidelined for five weeks with a serious ankle injury sustained a week after he made an NRL record of fifty-nine tackles in one game. Sam Thaiday and Brad Meyers are also included on an eight man bench.

Explosive Storm in Brisbane tonight!
by Mike Aitken
Saturday September 11, 2004

Tonight the Broncos continued the trend of leading their opposition into half time, only to fall asleep in the second. The Broncos started the game strongly, completing their sets, putting a clearing kick in away from Billy Slater, following with a good kick-chase game and throwing themselves around in defence. The Broncos scored a classic try from Tonie Carroll running a beautiful line off a Darren Lockyer short ball to crash over Billy Slater sending the crowd wild. Lockyer converted the try to lead the Storm six points to nil.

The Broncos continued to control possession and played in the Storm’s half for the remaining thirty minutes. The Storm continued to struggle with the Broncos speed of rucks, and in their effort to slow them down, gave away a penalty right in front of their goals. Lockyer added the two points and went into half time leading eight points to nil.

BRONCO! OUT NOW
by Brisbane Broncos
Thursday September 9, 2004

The third 2004 issue of Bronco! - the official magazine of the Brisbane Broncos – is out NOW!

Focusing on the NRL finals – which again involves the Broncos – the magazine cover carries a banner headline “Batten Down the Hatches”, and features action photos of internationals Dane Carlaw and Brent Tate, as well as an image of Dane “ready for battle”.

Bronco also details the re-signing of champion Darren Lockyer, and pinpoints the records he is likely to conquer in his next five seasons with the Broncos. We also list all signings by the club for 2005 and beyond, including the return of Brad Thorn and Justin Hodges.

Lockyer and Hunt re-sign
by Michael Fedrick
Monday September 6, 2004

Some overdue good news emerged from the Broncos stable today, with the club announcing the re-signing of star five-eighth Darren Lockyer and young gun Karmichael Hunt.

Lockyer's five year contract will almost certainly make him the first 300-plus game player for the Broncos, while Hunt's position in the team is secure for the next two seasons.

Broncos CEO Bruno Cullen was obviously ecstatic with the news, after losing players like Gorden Tallis, Craig Frawley and Michael De Vere throughout the course of the 2004 season.

"We recently lost one champion in Gorden Tallis, so we are obviously delighted to announce today that we have Darren and Karmichael remaining with us in the Broncos stable," he said.

Broncos mauled by Panthers
by Mike Aitken
Saturday September 4, 2004

The Brisbane Broncos have completed one of their worst runs into a finals series in their sixteen year history, with a heavy loss to the Penrith Panthers. The Broncos were physically blown away by the Panthers with an intimidating score line forty six points to twenty, the Broncos have a lot of soul searching to do before next weeks home final.

With a scrappy draw over wooden spoon contenders; South Sydney, and a come from behind win against the Wests Tigers, tonight was a chance for the Broncos to turn their form around heading into the play-offs. Unfortunately the exact opposite happened; the Broncos defence crumbled against aggressive running forwards and quick plays the balls. The Broncos missed approximately one hundred tackles and only managed 5 line breaks.

Brisbane didn’t get off to the best of starts with Carl Webb and Craig Gower involved in a nasty head clash after taking a blind-side run. Carl Webb left the field and didn’t return while Gower stayed on and directed his team beautifully around the park. From that point on, the Broncos lacked any real intensity and enthusiasm. At the end of that set, Casey McGuire put a neat little grubber through, only to watch Rhys Wesser scooping it up and running thirty meters without any of the chasers laying a hand on him.

Penrith then started up the engine room, John Lang and Joel Clinton hitting it up the middle, while Joe Gulavo and Trent Waterhouse hitting the edges. They were able to play the ball quickly and the Broncos were finding it hard to gain authority in the ruck.

Civoniceva leads Broncos home
by Chris Cox
Saturday August 21, 2004

Petero Civoniceva became the Brisbane Broncos' 15th captain when he led them to a gritty 24-20 win over Wests Tigers at Suncorp Stadium, and showed his injured front row partner how it's done.

"Shane Webcke will not be captaining," coach Wayne Bennett joked after the game. "He's done his dash, we haven't had a win under Webcke. We had the right man this time."

Civoniceva played a strong hand as the Broncos came from behind twice in the second half to win a keenly fought contest. The Test front rower ploughed over for an important try with 13 minutes remaining to put the Broncos in front 18-14.

Bennett praised the ability of the players to put aside the thoughts of who wasn't there to get the job done. "We had 10 guys that played first grade this year, regular first graders missing. Five won't be back this year and five will be," he said.

Bulldogs crash Suncorp party
by Chris Cox
Sunday August 15, 2004

An NRL Suncorp Stadium record crowd of 49,571 wasn't enough to inspire the Broncos as Canterbury stamped the seal of authenticity on their premiership credentials with a powerhouse 46-18 victory.

Scores were locked 12-all at half time before the Bulldogs scored three unanswered tries in the first 15 minutes of the second half to leap to a 30-12 lead.

With the crowd lifting behind them, the Broncos rallied to hit back through fullback Karmichael Hunt, who handled twice before scoring in the corner. Darren Lockyer's sideline conversion reduced the margin to just 12 points at 30-18, however Matt Utai's second try in the left corner and Hazem El Masri's sideline goal ended hopes of a Broncos revival and spectators began filing for the exits with 10 minutes remaining.

Suncorp Sellout!
by Chris Cox
Friday August 13, 2004

The highly anticipated top of the ladder clash between the Broncos and Canterbury at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday is likely to be a sell out with only 4000 tickets remaining available as at 4pm Friday.

Broncos managing director, Bruno Cullen, has described the response from fans for what could be the premiership match of the season as "phenomenal".

"We always thought this game would draw a big crowd, but the demand from our fans for tickets has far outweighed our expectations," he said.

"Indications are that all tickets will be sold before Sunday, and that is an outstanding result for our game. It is also an indication - I believe - of the brand of football our guys have been playing in 2004."

Stagg hopeful despite injury
by Super User
Thursday August 12, 2004

Broncos lock David Stagg is still hopeful of making a return to football before the finals despite tests revealing a high ankle sprain suffered in the first half of last week's 21-14 win over the Warriors in Auckland.

Stagg, who was taken to hospital for x-rays after a sickening twist in a tackle by Warriors fullback Brent Webb, was cleared of any bone damage however medical staff expect he will still miss 5-6 weeks of football.

That would indicate a return to the side for the second or third week of the finals series. However, Stagg believes his quick healing could have him back earlier.

Berrigan double as Broncos lose Stagg
by Chris Cox
Sunday August 8, 2004

The Brisbane Broncos have extended their winning run to six games with a gutsy 21-14 win over a fired up New Zealand Warriors in Auckland, their first win in the northern city since 2000.

Centre Shaun Berrigan scored two second half tries as the Broncos came from 8-6 down at the break to secure one of the most satisfying wins of the season. However, their joy was tempered with the news that young star David Stagg is likely to have played his last game of the season after suffering a suspected broken leg in the first half.

Stagg fell awkwardly in a tackle by Warriors fullback Brent Webb and required a morphine shot before being taken to hospital for x-rays and treatment.
