Brisbane Broncos vs Canberra Raiders

Telstra Premiership Round 5
Canberra Stadium, Canberra, Saturday April 13, 2002

The Canberra hoodoo has been broken, albeit unconvincingly. The Brisbane Broncos escaped with their second consecutive 18-16 win against a Canberra Raiders team who didn't deserve to lose. Despite being hammered 7-3 in the penalty count, it was penalties that were crucial to the Broncos' escape. Their second came 10 minutes from full time and led to Allan Langer's try that levelled the scores, and their final penalty came with just four minutes on the clock, and Michael De Vere kicked the match winning goal.

Brisbane's forwards looked flat after their epic clash six days earlier, and Canberra were full of enthusiasm. Unfortunately for the Raiders, that enthusiasm was not converted to two competition points.
