Brisbane Broncos vs St George-Illawarra Dragons

Telstra Premiership Round 17
ANZ Stadium, Brisbane, Sunday July 7, 2002

After a lethargic first half which left them trailing St George-Illawarra Dragons 16-12, the Brisbane Broncos went on a rampage in the second half, sealing victory with four unanswered tries. The Dragons came ready to play and while it was three tries all at the break, the Broncos paid the penalty for an awful day with the boot for Michael De Vere, missing his first three shots at goal. Some soft defence late in the tackle count also penalised the Broncos, with all three of their first half tries coming on the last tackle.

With a host of players set to back up yet against just 24 hours after the Australia-Great Britain Test when they play Penrith away next Saturday night, the Broncos desperately needed a win and in the end did enough. However, it's clear that contract negotiations and Test selection are weighing heavily on the minds of some of the players.
