Brisbane Broncos vs Wests Tigers

Telstra Premiership Round 12
Campbelltown Stadium, Sydney, Friday May 31, 2002

In arguably the club's finest hour, a virtual reserve grade Brisbane Broncos outfit has scored one of the great upsets with a 28-14 win over Wests Tigers at Campbelltown. With 19 players unavailable due to injury and State of Origin commitments, the Broncos fielded a staggering 9 players with 2 first grade games experience or less against the Tigers who were fresh coming off a bye. The Bronco youngsters dug in deep to take a slender 6-2 lead into half time before two tries early in the second half sealed the match at 18-2.

Frustrated, the Tigers turned to physical intimidation but even on that score the Broncos stood their ground and the elation at full time was obvious and well deserved. Scott Prince had a memorable return to first grade almost a year since he broke his leg, while Brad Meyers showed plenty of courage to play despite an ankle injury expected to keep him out for up to a month. The Broncos' unbeaten record against the Tigers remains intact and they return to the top of the competition until at least Sunday.
