Brisbane Broncos vs North Queensland Cowboys

Telstra Premiership Round 1
Dairy Farmers Stadium, Townsville, Saturday March 16, 2002

The Brisbane Broncos have kicked off their 2002 Telstra Premiership campaign in fine style with a commanding victory over the North Queensland Cowboys in Townsville. After the game hung in the balance at 8-6 at half time, the Broncos went on a rampage early in the second half with a double to Shaun Berrigan and tries also to Brent Tate and Ashley Harrison.

Brisbane were well served with successful returns from Allan Langer and Andrew Gee, while Gorden Tallis went close to scoring a number of times. But the star of the show came off the bench. The Crocodile Hunter, or at least his namesake, Steve Irwin, scored a double in the first half with his first two touches in first grade. The Broncos looked sharp in attack after a dour first half, although it must be said the Cowboys failed to compete in the second half.
