In what is likely to have been their last appearance at ANZ Stadium, the Brisbane Broncos have defeated Parramatta in a gripping finals encounter 24-14. In what is almost poetic justice, the Broncos defeated the original villains of the 1993 christening of the ground with two late tries, twice coming back from deficits. After a scoreless opening 30 minutes in which the two sides' brutal defence was the highlight, Parramatta skipped away with a controversial penalty and a try from the ensuing set. Shaun Berrigan reduced the margin to two points before half time before a brilliant Lote Tuqiri try put Brisbane in front for the first time. Parramatta hit back with a scintillating show of speed from big Dean Widders, but just when the Broncos looked to be struggling Gorden Tallis stood up, scoring a vital try. Allan Langer capped off his career at the ground with his 100th career try and the matchwinner ensuring the disappointing crowd of just over 19000 would at least spend the night celebrating.
