Veteran Darren Smith has answered the call of coach Wayne Bennett, signing a short term contract with the Broncos while they overcome their injury crisis and State of Origin commitments. Smith, who played with the Broncos from 1995-1998 and won two premierships and set a tryscoring record along the way, came out of retirement early this year for Easts Tigers in the Queensland Cup.
Late last year, Australian coach Chris Anderson called on Smith for the third and final Test as injuries plagued the touring Kangaroos. Smith played a key role in that final triumph that secured Australia's first Ashes clean sweep since 1986.
Smith is a tough as nails forward who will add invaluable experience and support to representative forwards Shane Webcke, Petero Civoniceva, Dane Carlaw and Tonie Carroll who feel the strain of State of Origin more than anybody.
