The Broncos beat off heavy competition from the Queensland Reds and Queensland Bulls for the services of this extremely gifted youngster after he finished high school at the end of 2003. Equally at home at five-eighth, halfback or hooker, Barnes was outstanding for the Toowoomba Clydesdales last season and he has matured greatly in the past 12 months, gaining both in size and strength. He was a member of the Junior Kangaroos and played in the Australian Open Invitational side, both of which took on Papua New Guinea at the end of 2004.
