Wendell Sailor's off field antics have brought him much unwanted attention, but he still remains the most exciting winger in rugby league. Tall, fast, strong and agile, Sailor is a monster for opposition backlines to stop, particularly from kick returns.

Sailor also showed plenty of strength of character in recent years to turn around a worrying deficiency under the high ball. So well did he turn things around that he turned the deciding State of Origin match of 1998 on its ear with a scintillating take and 50 metre dash.

Another first choice selection for representative teams, Sailor has the potential to be the best winger the game has seen. However, itchy feet and a desire to succeed at Rugby Union could see his career cut short.

Along with most of his teammates, Sailor started season 1999 poorly. He turned it all around, signified perfectly by his length of the field try against Newcastle in round 22. He starred for Australia in the Tri-Nations series in October and November, easily being Australia's best player in all three matches.

2000 was his best season by a long way. With 18 tries he was the club's leading tryscorer along with his wing partner Lote Tuqiri, he was outstanding in representative football despite Queensland's 3-0 thrashing at the hands of New South Wales, and he was one of Australia's best in the World Cup triumph in England.

On returning from England, Sailor stated his desire to stay with Rugby League and to play out his career with the Broncos, amidst rumours of a switch to English league or Union. Sadly for Rugby League, Sailor has decided our game is not good enough for him and is eyeing off a Rugby Union contract in 2002. Judging by his statements, he's at long odds to continue in League beyond 2001.
