Rookie Update: Tom Learoyd

For my third rookie spotlight I have chosen Tom Learoyd. 'Tommy' comes to the Broncos straight from high school. He represented the junior kangaroos recently and has also starred for the New South Wales under 19's against Queensland last year at Lang Park. Tom has the power, agility and skill to dominate oppostion forward packs the same way as Brad Thorn did for the Broncos. He has been playing centre recently for the Toowoomba Clydesdales, but I see his future with the Broncos in the second row.

Ok lets get started!

Name: Tom Learoyd.
Birth Date: 13th of September 1985.
Birth Place: Tweed Heads.
School: Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School.
Height: 192 centimeters.
Weight: 115 kilograms.
Preferred Position: Centre.
Nickname: Tommy.
Junior Club: Peel Valley.

Learoyd is a massive person to say the least. I was lucky enough to watch him train one day at Suncorp Stadium. Now, he's easy to spot, just look for the biggest player on the field. Being a schoolboy sprint champion I expected him to be quick, but for his size he just blew me away. He's heavier than Shane Webcke, and is taller than Dane Carlaw. He was able to run at full pace, stop on a dime, change direction and hit top speed almost instantly. His athletic ability is awesome; and being a schoolboy high jump champion, it shows! At one stage I had my back turned, and I heard this almighty 'BANG' and a ball travelling the length of the field, Tom Learoyd had put boot to ball inside the twenty meter line, and once it finished bouncing it reached the ingoal at the other end.

I expect we will see Tom Learoyd in full flight soon, Brad Meyers injury has opened the door for Learoyd, and with his athletic ability and speed I can see him as the suitable replacement. With Petero Civoniceva out for another two weeks, Learoyds' size is also in his favour. I would love to see big 'Tommy' and big 'Willie' go at each other on Sunday, but that decision is up to Wayne Bennett.
