The good the bad and the ugly!

What impressed me, and what didn't!

The forwards that impressed me were: Neale Wyatt, Sam Thaiday, Darren Mapp, Gorden Tallis, Petero Civonicevaa, Corey Parker and Michael Ryan. The younger more eager forwards were keen to impress and did so with quick play the balls, bone crushing defence and constant yardage with the ball. Gorden and Petero were both leading from the front with some inspirational breaks and classic defence.

The forwards that didn't impress overly were Brad Meyers and Casey Mcguire. Not only did Meyers make fundamental errors, he did so at crucial times and positions in the game. Although he played a gutsy game, it was good to see some mongrel back in the bloke. Mcguire seemed to be quiet and was used sparingly.

But the topic that has everyone around town talking is; how Darren Lockyer will go at five-eighth? One answer; fantastic! Not only did Lockyer become involved in nearly every set, he directed the team around the park with the same experience and precision as Brad Fittler. His combination with Brett Seymour is very promising. One thing that I was impressed with was Seymours short kicking game, class above anyone else on the field that night.

The centre pairings of Shaun Berrigan and Tonie Carroll is ordinary to say the least. Carroll lacked the penetration that saw him one of the most powerful gap-hitters in the game. Berrigan displayed some excellent attacking flair but didn't link with his winger in Carmichael Hunt often.

This leads me onto Hunt. This kid has the skills. He has the build and pace to be a great winger. One moment in the game a backline movement was happening, Seymour passed to Lockyer, then Lockyer passed long to Berrigan, Berrigan gave a flat and late pass to Hunt, when, as he broke the line juggled it out in front of him. While being tackled, Hunt, in a flash gathered it back in (in mid-air) then in the same movement flick passed it to Shaun Berrigan who was unsuspecting, but caught it. This happened all in the space of a second, which showed me this kid has the skills comparable to Nathan Blacklock.

Stuart Kelly was ordinary and will find it hard to retain a position on the wing with Hunt, Frawley, Minto and himself all competing for the same position.
